What motivates me to stay active

A sister in the ward asked several ladies in the ward what we do to motivate our selves, what we use to battle and increase our will power and our exercise ideas. And here is my long answer to her question. I just thought that I would share.

I don't know if my motivation will help you or any one but one of my biggest motivations to exercise and stay active is, I have had two knee surgery's and my knee really starts to bother me if I put on any weight. I have to stay active for the muscles around my knee to stay strong or it is so much more work later. Knee surgery is awful and I don't ever want to do it again. Granted at times I don't do a very good job. My right leg is significantly larger than my left leg because I favor it. I make it do most of the work, even when I walk. So i need to be better and using them evenly. You probably didn't want to know this info and way to much for your simple question.

But another motivation is my children. I want them to love and respect the outdoors as much as their parents. We try to go on family hikes. We even do difficult ones but we have to bribe. "When we get to the top there will be lots of blueberries to pick" , "If we make it to the top we can go to Subway afterward" or we might be able to see grandma and papa's house from the top." It is so much work getting them to the top of a mountain but once they make it they are so proud that they went so far and how much they can see. There are tears involved sometimes, and some of those times we turn around. We want to make it an enjoyable experience for them so they don't hate it.

Another thing is my children love to ride their bikes. So we walk to church every Sunday and they ride their bikes. I grew up in Germany for a couple of years and that is how every one got to church. I have them ride on their bikes during the week while I run and try to keep up with them.

I may not enjoy getting out all of the time. Some times I like to be lazy and not get out but I always find that I am happier and my children are happier if we just get out and do something active. Our home is a lot more peaceful.

I don't know if there is anything useful in this email. I just kept writing. Thanks for asking.

Those are very good reasons to stay active! I wish I was better but I haven't figured out a way to do it with Dallin around. I know it is possible but for right now I am still trying to get used to him. Plus, it is too hot here for much physical activity! I wish I was more like you though...

I find it so hard to stay motivated. I signed up for a half marathon thinking that it would motivate me to work out every morning on my new treadmill. My goal was 5 to 6 days a week, but I do good to get 3 or 4 days in. I can do three miles in an hour, but I only do an hour. I don't know how I am going to find the time to work up to working out for 4 hours straight. I try and tell myself that losing weight will take time, but that usually does not make me feel any better, and somehow my weight makes me less motivated to work out. I am hoping that once my sister can workout again that she will push me to go harder and longer.

I just got to play with Cas this afternoon (Yay!). She sure likes someone to be active with, I think that's a great sign you are doing a good job. :)

Though I'm not fit, I try to stay active enough to experience some the world's beauties. I wanted to hike Mt. McGinnis, and trained by climbing the stairs at work (9th floor). I plan to hike Mt. Juneau this Labor day and am pulling things together for the Chilkoot pass. This means I'm {shocked horror} running! Yeah, I can't believe it either.
